Let’s Be Honest
The collaborative nature of my title belies the confrontation beneath. I am inviting you in but once you arrive it’s not a pleasant experience. A black clay box incised with the words ‘I cause climate change’. It’s interior contains hidden messages to our past and future - a record of our culpability. It will eventually return to the soil it comes from to be discovered by whoever, whatever comes next. Like the black box from an aeroplane crash it seeks to give some kind of explanation of what happened to us. We know what we are doing but we don’t know how to stop.
The word change on the top layer of the cube is the only word that has been completely incised. It lets the light in on a reflective base.
From seeds of wildness planted in Africa and by my family, I have been an environmentalist all my life and an environmental economist in my career. It’s not complicated. Our planet and climate are in trouble. We are the cause. If we want to survive, we need to change.
